3 Surprising Ways Your Health Journey Changes You

3 Surprising Ways Your Health Journey Changes You

Health and fitness journeys change people. Whether you’re just starting your health journey or have traveled on this wellness road for decades, you know that to be true. It’s changed your eating habits, your exercise routine, and maybe even your friend groups.

But it’s likely changed your life in ways you haven’t even recognized. Here are three ways your health journey changes you for the better.

1. Getting Rid of the Guilt

As women, many of us fight to overcome guilt and shame. Sometimes, it’s a relic of our upbringing. For others, it’s brought on by societal pressure. No matter the source, guilt is an ever-present gremlin that sits on our shoulders and tells us we’re not good enough.

Focusing on a health and fitness journey helps dismantle that guilt.

At first, you probably feel guilty for taking an hour or two out of your day to focus on yourself. You might feel like you’re neglecting your partner or your kids, or missing something important at work. Over time, though, you realize that taking time for yourself isn’t neglectful or selfish. It’s quite the opposite.

When you purposefully pursue your health, you become a better version of yourself. You are less stressed, have more energy, and have better focus. That one hour alone can revitalize you, allowing you to be more fully present for your family members, friends, and co-workers.

Once we recognize that getting and staying healthy benefits those around us just as much as it benefits ourselves, we can let go of that guilt – and that’s incredibly freeing.

2. Modeling Health for Those We Love

As women, we’re conditioned to put the needs of others ahead of our own. I notice this most when it comes to mealtime with my kids. I know I should eat lean proteins and vegetables to keep myself healthy and strong, but they want pepperoni pizza and sugary drinks. When I give in, I’m not only sabotaging my own health but also allowing them to make choices that will negatively impact their health.

Instead, I dig in my heels and tell the kids we’re having grilled chicken and roasted veggies instead. Not only am I doing something good for myself, but I’m also modeling healthy habits for those I love the most.

When you embrace a healthy lifestyle, you don’t just change your own life. You’re impacting the lives of those around you, too. The changes might be incremental, but make no mistake: your health journey will change not only yourself but also your family and friends.

3. Embracing Self-Love

Perhaps the most surprising benefit of a health journey is increased self-love and self-acceptance.

A health and fitness journey is rarely easy. It’s rewarding, sure. But easy? Definitely not.

There are always going to be days when you JUST. DON’T. WANNA. But you do it anyway, pushing through the pain, overcoming the doubt, and making it to the finish line. Over time, you become stronger, you reach new goals, and you start to recognize your own power. You find mental toughness you didn’t know existed. And you learn that what you once thought impossible is indeed possible.

This perseverance and tenacity show us how strong we truly are – both in mind and body. That’s when we start to embrace self-love at its deepest levels.

Your health and fitness journey is about so much more than losing weight, building muscle, or getting that next PR. It’s about discovering who you are – the grit, determination, strength, and yes, the weakness – and learning to love yourself wholly and completely.

Health is a journey, not a destination. Along the way, the journey changes us – and those around us – in the most unexpected and wonderful ways.

Here’s to the journey, friends. May we never stop growing.

Xoxo,

Emily
